The Purpose of Habits
It is often said that when the use (purpose) of something is not known, abuse is inevitable.
It has been scientifically proven that over 40% of our actions are based on habits and not on intentional conscious decisions.
This means that we do most of the things we do without thinking about them.
For instance, when somebody calls your name, you immediately turn your head in the direction of the voice and probably respond before you realize what you are doing.
Think about the other daily routines we all engage in: for example-waking up, brushing your teeth, taking your bath, ironing your cloth, driving your car, checking your social media accounts/handles etc. We rarely think about these things before we execute them; perfectly, in order.
Habits therefore are very beneficial. In fact, without habits we can’t live a highly successful life. It frees the brain from the mundane activities and drudgery of everyday life. It enables the brain to focus, think and create new solutions to emerging problems of our existence.
Imagine when you were learning how to drive a car. The attention and energy required would never allow you do any other thing. If we had to continuously expend such resources for our various daily activities, we would be so overwhelmed and un-productive to such a point that progress or even survival becomes almost impossible.
So the purpose of habit is to systemize and automate any activity we do repeatedly and thereby release the brain to perform higher mental functions.
Now that’s a great evolutionary advantage.
But this automation could lead to serious problems.
If a behavior that has harmful consequences becomes habitualized/automated, your brain no longer participates fully in the decision making process for that activity to be carried out. You therefore lose conscious control over that activity, so you can’t stop yourself, even when you wish to or try to.
Is there any behaviour you have been battling to stop?
It is because you have lost control over it, since your brain has automated it in a natural bid to make you more productive, efficient and successful.
Unfortunately that habit may be hurting your health, wealth or overall happiness.
Have you tried several methods and strategies and they all failed?
Are you losing money, self-confidence, self-esteem and respect due to your inability to control that behavior?
What is the cost: financial, emotional, and psychological?
